Anyone who likes to watch (and photograph) the nioght sky knows what a curse city lights are.  Have a look at this picture on APOD (Astronomy Picture of the Day)  http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap080416.html

Flagstaff is a city of about 60,000 people and is the first International Dark Sky City.

Australia could aspire to a few of these.  And it is a stunning photo.

And the next page one from Sweden is nice too.

I like the picture that goes the other direction: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0011/earthlights2_dmsp_big.jpg You can trace the Trans-Siberian Railroad, the highway systems of the US and have a look at the coastlines of Spain & France on the Mediterranean.
