I have just purchased a UV filter and Lens Hood for sony a290, does have in a uv filter and hood make any difference to your shots??

Apart from protecting the glass on the end of your lens it should reduce haziness caused by UV light however, the slight downside is that it will reduce the amount of light entering your lens by a small fraction. The lens hood will help against unwanted light flares hitting the front glass.
