I am still learning some of the feature and foibles of the specifics of how the software works myself (to be honest). There is currently a limit for attachments of images in posts of 120KB. the system is set to resize automatically for anything over that size. This default is in place to stop people joining to upload mega-tons of images for some advertising scam from a post linked elsewhere. With a small community like this is in the early stages, but difficult if you have hundreds or thousands of users.

The work around is easy and efficient. Post all images to the gallery in whatever category you like. The image max here is much higher, though an 800 x 600 image (800 is max length or width which fills most screens leaving space for headers etc) saved at level 8 or 9 will provide good screen quality, while not being good enough for people to nick and print and still topping out at a file size of 150 - 200 KB.
Once posted you will see below the image there is BBC code that you can cut and past into any posting and voila! you image appears in your post. It also save duplicating images.
(Since this post was written, new gallery posts now appear in the "genre" topics area as posts.
