Don't know whereabouts you are, but look for a good second hand DSLR.  On various forums I am on Canon 20D bodies are now down to $200-$300, and you may be able to pick up a general purpose lens like a Canon 18-55 fairly cheap.  These will be fine for starting out and getting to know DSLRs and down the track a bit you can get better lenses and then upgrade the body to something later with more features.

Camera stores sometimes have used goods that have been traded as well. but they tend to be more expensive

Forums with good numbers of members and thus many items for sale (or you can out a wanted ad)
Canon POTN (US based worldwide): http://photography-on-the.net/forum/
Australian Photography: http://www.ausphotography.net.au/
Texas Photo Forum: http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum/portal.php

Here is a link to a 30D on POTN for just $400 (US though).  That;s the sort of price you can expect to pay.

Do not neglect Nikon, they have some very good cameras especially on the second hand market the Nikon d90 or the d200 semi pro would be about your price, here in the UK you can pick up a d2x for £450 cameout 2005 new would be £4500. All Nikon lenses are cheaper than cannon lenses of equivalent focal length and in almost all cases match them for quality. The minor drawback is that Nikon cameras tend to have less pixels than cannon. so the choice is yours both are top rate cameras good luck and let us know what you choose

Glad you piped up Bob, as I know very little about Nikon models.  Then there are Pentax and Sony too - anyone?

These are 2 good Australian based photography forums that have 2nd hand gear for sale.
Have a look at some of the Pentax models like the K100D super, K200D, K-m & K10D, all good and more than likely available at a good price. If buying 2nd hand, make sure you find out the shutter count on the camera as some can be pretty high. Most modern DSLR's will be good for atleast 100,000 shots or more.
