Now I was reading about that in the Sydney Morning Herald just a week or so ago but they gave it some special name.   I'll see if I can find it, I'm sure there was an explanation.

OK.  Essentially it is a backward rolling mass of cloud which is only formed by a slow amplitude air wave in the moist air of the Gulf just before the wet season.  The ABC article has the explanation about half way down, go to birth of a glory..

Something else to put on my list of things to photograph, if you can be lucky enough to pick the right time to be there. In the SMH article, which I never did find, there was a very spectacular pic taken from the ground.
