Well, maybe. Undecided

I've managed to get enough folding together to upgrade from my current 350D to a newer camera. I'm thinking of going to the next level and getting a semi pro cam, and the 2 I have in mind are the 40D or the 50D Huh?. Trouble is, I can't decide. I'm thinking the 40D, with a bit of L glass would be a better buy than the 50D with kit lens, as my budget is this side of £1000. I've also heard that there is a feeling that the 40D is actually a better camera than the 50D. Or, are there any other Canon models that square up in this budget bracket? Shocked

Opinions please, bearing in mind that all my lenses are Canon fit, so realistically, that puts Nikon or any of the others out of the running.

I will value all your input and opinions, as I want to get this one right.

thanks,

Dale.

Dale, don't overlook used.  I bought my 20D body from a forum member on http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=14  -  a huge worldwide Canon forum.

I don't go there all that often simply becuase there are SO many photos and postings I can't keep up, but it is a good source for knowledge and buying gear.  There are many British members, if you want a 40D (and many swear it is the better body) then have a look.

EDITED TO ADD:
Dale, I went back and was having a poke around and found this post (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=710565)
--------------------

I'm selling two (2) Canon 40D bodies with grips and extra batteries. I will also include 2 memory cards (a 1gb and a 2gb) with each.

These cameras are my work cameras. I'm estimating they'll have 50K actuations on them.

IMPORTANT NOTE: These cameras were completely refreshed and serviced by Canon Professional Services in May of 2009. They are virtually spotless and in perfect working order.

The price for either set is $875 plus shipping and 3% if you use PayPal.

In addition, I am selling a spotless Canon 300mm L Series f/4 IS lens. The lens is absolutely as new... I rarely used it.

The price for the lens is $1150 plus shipping and 3% if you use PayPal.

All items include the original packaging and accessories.

As noted, my reputation on this board and as a professional photographer speak for themselves. I assure that buyers will be completely satisfied with these items. They are top notch and have been used with care. My work relies on the condition of my equipment.

I would be looking at the 40D with L series glass.
That said I have seen stuff coming out of the 50D + kit which is brilliant.
Personally I would be looking at the good lenses, since I upgraded and have been using my 70 - 200 f2.8 IS USM L  (Although the f4 is rumored to be as good as this lens) I almost never take it off the camera ... it is so sharp and fast with super quick focus !

If you know what you are doing then you could have a homemade pinhole camera and still take a decent photograph Smiley

Thanks. Smiley

I went for a 40D, with the 70-200f4 usm in the end.  Just playing with it at the moment but I'll put it to serious use very, very soon.

I am waiting for the same lens to arrive, Dale.  We can compare shots!

And I've ordered and paid for the 100-400L, there is 2-3 weeks delivery delay from canon then I will drive up and collect it.  Can hardly contain myself, I am so excited!

Both of you will love the 70 - 200mm L lenses ... they are so good. Mine stays on 90% of the time now !!

Really starting to get some gear with the 100 - 400mm L as well Odille. You will have to bring it (if you come)  to that big weekend at Fort Lytton !!

My 40D was an excellent performer, Dale, you'll do well with it..."L" glass only enhances any camera Canon makes...Ben

Thanks Ben, I'm enjoying the combo, the L Glass hasn't been off the 40D body yet and I think I'll be keeping it that way. Wink
