I have the D70 and I'm using it more on Manuel now than i used to.with the dial on the top left set to Manuel i then change f.stops and shutter with the two command dials back and front right side,ISO is set in menu at 200 but i fined that when i check the camera settings on my computer the ISO rating changes anything up to 1600 this makes a lot of my pictures noisy. so peep's what am i doing wrong ? PS I hope to have the Nikon D300 by next weekend fingers crossed. It is coming in from the US fo A

Ok. It appears you have 'Auto ISO' switched on. This apparently sets the LOWEST ISO the camera will go to but it fluctuates up from there, choosing what it thinks best. You would think this would go off when you went to 'Manual' but apparently not.
It seems you must use the Menu to turn Auto ISO to OFF.
Two of the answers:
1. from Andrew - Simple --- he has "auto ISO " set to on in the menu.
With Auto ISO on he will be setting the ISO in the menu but that only becomes the lowest ISO that the camera will go to. Once he sets Auto ISO to off then the ISO he sets in the menu will be the only ISO that is used.
Pretty sure that is how the D70 works, similar to most other models, if not Arthur will set the record straight shortly I guess --------
2. from Arthur - The ISO button only controls the base ISO you want.
That really irks me that Nikon can't see the common sense in how much more natural it would be to have access to Auto ISO via the ISO button, rather than solely via the cameras menu system! It's fair enough that you'd have to alter the variables available in Auto ISO, via the menu system, but to simply switch from 100 to ISO6400 and then to Auto(then back to 100 again) makes so much more sense.
I'm always adjusting the AutoISO setting. It's my most commonly altered camera setting.-----------------
However, Bob, this would be a useful feature if shooting in low light where you know the pics may end up noisy but want to get them anyway, like a concert etc.

Thank's for that Odille I'm sitting here looking at my camera menu and yes there is two settings for ISO one too set the ISO required the other too turn on/off auto. As you said turning command dial to manual should mean just that but it seams Nikon disagree.Once again thank you

I don't even use a Nikon but this thread had no doubt helped me and many other members I daresay.
That's just one of the terrific things about a Forum like ours, across the miles. Sharing so selflessly, in order to give advice, help and unbiased criticism.
Best of luck Bob. Will look forward to seeing the results.

One of the best things about this forum is just how friendly everyone is and like you say how good the advice, help, and criticism is. I have seen some terrible stuff on some other forums where people just basically totally rubbish other people's attempts at photography, and that doesnt help anyone !! I like it here

That is why I like it and it is my #1 forum. The other one is good because there are a lot of people on there so it is a good source of knowledge etc, but we all seem to be 'nice folks' here.

How did you go with that resetting the ISO, Bob? Is that darned Nikon doing what you want now, rather than hijacking your best efforts?
