Hi all.

One of my other passions is motorsport, F1 in particular.  I was just wondering if any of you down under were going to the Grand Prix at Melbourne Park this weekend?

Don't forget your camera. Wink

I'm not sure but I think on other forums I have seen that people have had trouble taking cameras into the GP with officious security guards.  Keep it as low key as you can going through the gate.  From memory if you have a set up that looked professional to them they may tell you you cannot take it in.

Yeah, they get a bit worried about other people making money from the sale of the images.
The AFL is getting a bit the same, selling the photography rights to a stock agency, Getty used to have the contract for it, then when the contract finished the AFL made a new contract with an Australian stock
agency and Getty didn't like it so took them to court, not sure what happened after that.
They are all just to money hungry, and if you do something they don't like you can get in alot of trouble.

Its the same with the cricket ... no camera + lens combo over 200mm allowed.
Going to the Reds v Chiefs rugby union tonight ... dont know if they have rules like that ... its hard tho cause the light isnt great so perhaps they dont worry that much ??

Crikey guys, I didn't realise you had so many restrictions down there.  I have never been aware of any here, saying that, the last GP I went to was in 2004.

They can be a bit funny about concerts and the like here but not with sporting events, as far as I know.

Some point and shoots have lenses well over 500mm, Canon Powershot SX1is & SX 10is has 560 and the
Olympus SP 565uz has 520mm. Maybe they will ban these to soon.

The other thing here is that it is next to impossible to get freelance photographer passes to any decent sporting event ... you have to be working for a publication which has to write the promoters a guarantee that your photos of the event will be published !!!
So even with an ABN (Australian business number) I cant get freelance passes, which i guess is ok cause you dont want 10 000 freelance photographers running around the track and pit lane at indy or similar !
