Immigration and all that goes with it

So, as I mentioned in my intro thread, I am and have been interested in immigrating to Australia for a while and I've dug through various sites full of related information. I've locked my sights in NSW, Sydney (or area). As I've heard from some people that live there, it's a more expensive place to live with cost of housing and the like; what else might I expect?

I was also curious how getting a job from overseas is done, what with the business of a Work Visa. It seems like an ideal situation to me to secure a job before making the Pacific leap, but I'm not entirely comprehending on how that process goes, with sponsorship and the like. Can anyone clarify on any of these points?
