Yep it's another one of those nights nothing on t.v so I've had a look through our members we have 137 now, good i here you all say BUT only 83 active 54 not, so lets get our thinking caps on and see what we can do to get them to post.attracting new members is good but unless we offer them something they want they don't seem to participate. any newbies out there not posted want to tell us why not or those that have tell others why it's good.
as a foot note to this only 18 members top the 100 posts mark

I think the next step is to put up some kind of regular "how to column" kind of board. My problem is time. Between work, kids sport, photoshopping portraits and general home style duties, I start to run out of it.

I think it may be time to deligate! i don't know if this is possible, but if it is ask the rite people if they are willing to put in some time to keep what i think is the best site on line working. if not why not limit membership that would involve a lot of harsh chopping of those that do not post. in the end i would rather be a member of a site of 80 that are involved  than a site of 200 that are not. sorry for the harsh comments this is a good site it suffers from in activity from its members

Pruning the membership is never a good idea. A lot of people will register on a forum to keep up to date without posting.
I lurked on this forum for weeks prior to joining, and I am not nearly as active as I would like, but I would hate to be chopped off if I don't get back to posting for a period of time.

Since I don't get what the big deal is with the membership number vs number of posters is why doesn't someone explain why it should keep me up at night.

Bob

Work on the principal that if we have half the members that have made a post & 35 have past newbie status,  roughly 1 in 5 is an enthusiastic contributor. SO every day we get new members, the forum grows a bit more!!! From humble begginings, it has progressed well! It will continue to do so IF we all keep contributing!

Cheers

I am a fan of snotting, those that spam, but not because people do not post (yet) or may choose to observe for a while.
Everyone is a little bit right here.
Numbers are by no means the most important thing, but it is nice to grow and develop both wide-spread and localised groups that may choose to hook up, outside of the online version. We don't see all of our relatives and friends all of the time, but we don't dump them over it.
The member list is just a list, active (yet) or not, we do not waste space or time on it and I am all for a very open, rather than restricted group.
I very much enjoy the wide range of interests, location, age, demographic, whatever of everyone here. The commong thread is an enjoyment of making images. Perhaps we are all missing the same gene.

If we are forunate enough to have reasonable growth, it can easily be broken down by areas of interest, should we be fortunate enough to spin out of control.
..and BTW very happy to delegate, particularly on expertise or location.

Not too sure I understand what you mean by this ?
Break the site down into different areas of interest ?
What would you be delegating ?

Time is like a freeway of infinite lanes, all leading from the past to the future. A driver in lane A may crash, while a driver in lane B survives, it follows that by changing lanes one may be able to predict the future.

All I am saying is that the topic of "Photography" is very broad. As audience grows, it is no big deal to apply moderation rights to more experienced users or experts in a particular field of interest.

We are still very small, which in some ways give this place a village feel where you get to know a few people by name.
We are a long way from being overcrowded.

No problem at all, Bob...Discussion is how we get where we're going...I don't have the answer to your club's problem, it sounds like you're the only enthusiast there...Solitaire is a lonely passtime, maybe it's time to pick up your cards and find another game...

You've got a pretty good hand here, who's deal is it... Grin...Ben

Its all good Bob. As Ben says discussion, is the way forward - I'd love to get 10 quid an hour here! (I don't have a pound symbol).
Any ideas are always welcome and many of the categories and set ups are are result of just that.

most of the forums i have seen do this have died a slow death in my opinion it's not a good idea.
there are many reasons people do not post (eg. signed up but new to forums and just read until they get the hang of it). anyway all forums go through this it does take a bit of time to get it up and running with alot of members posting.

We are still 3 months off our 1st anniversary. I am very, very happy with the wonderful community we have attracted at this early
I am equally happy with teh spirit in which everyone jumps in with advice, freindly critique and ideas.

People will come and go, but a core will slowly develop. I am always open to a better way of doing things.
There are at least a couple of requests outstanding (mapping of member locations is one that comes to mind - thank you Odille).
While that one is available, it has not yet been tested on this version of the forum software and the pain of experience, tells me to wait as some of these things do a big rewrite of data tables.

The gallery could be "slicker" and there a few limitiations here and there. On the plus side we have the ability for gallery posts to automatically create a topic, which while not perfect, works pretty well.

If anyone has ideas, put 'em on the table, we even have a board for it.

I asked about this earlier, but what happened to the location under the avatar? There is such a wide range among our small little group and it is nice to see where people are from.
