I carried in a Lowepro back-pack camera bag and always declare at the gate (they check rigorously for alcohol - not to eliminate it, but to protect sales of their own products!).

In the small print it sometimes says no professional photography (not gear) but i am not selling them anyway.
It doesn't seem to be a problem at the outdoor events. Of late I have been to a few and have shots of some iconic Australian rock bands.

The cricket (GABBA) specifically states no camera and lens combinations of over 200mm permitted !
