For piles of coins, try stacking a few in a few different areas with scattered coins lying between. Also keep in mind that contrasting colors really make an image pop.... (avoid dark coppers though)....
Keep your angles high but sloping at a 2 to 3 degree angle.

Practice will help will 99% of photography. Some forms are tougher than others. Macro and coin work are among the hardest. I have almost a quarter million coin photos under my belt and take more every month. It is a science within a science. Can be tons on fun once you get it though  Grin
